CRIS TUFIÑO

QUERIDA PILAR 2020-2025

CASA EROSIONADA, MUSEO ANAHUACALI, CIUDAD DE MEXICO, DF

A video essay  narrated in the epistolary mode beginning in present day Berlin but traversing places and time: Puerto Rico (Isla de Cabras), France (Chateau de Fountainbleua), and a bar in Shibuya District in Tokyo, Japan in the year 2000.   The narrative film materializes as sculpture and moving image, an elegiac video letter to my grandmother who passed away in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in 2017.

"In her video work, Dear Pilar, Cristina Tufiño mines a broad milieu of imagery to compile and destabilize identifiers of self, place, and belonging. Images of the sea by the artist’s childhood home in San Juan, Puerto Rico, are juxtaposed with footage from Shibuya in Tokyo, where the artist spent part of her life, and later, with the lush gardens of the Chateau de Fontainebleau. Navigating a complex web of symbols, Dear Pilar asserts a resistance to both physical and ideological borders, and provides a compelling narrative self-portrait of the artist herself."
